Full Engine Rebuild -- $1500!!!

Well, I got the official total in on my engine rebuild... It looks icky..

about 800 in labor.. another 700 etc in parts... but that does include the cam, timing set, new pistons and rods, oil pump, etc.. Turns out if you break it down, the heads parts and labor will be around 400-500. (screw in studs, valve seats, rockers, pushrods, springs, valve job, surfacing etc)...

That leaves about $1000-1100 for the engine including cam. I figure that a crate engine will run me $1300 at least, without cam. Engine is only going .030 over, and .010 under on the deck and .010 under on the crank. Make sure everything is straight and ok. I was thinkin' crate engine last night, but after seeing the numbers, it looks less likely. It'll be expensive anyway I do it.

The one good thing out of this whole adventure in spending... 9.0 - 9.5:1 compression and possibily 325-350 HP. My jaw dropped on that one. I was going to ask him what I could do to go from the 250-275 I thought to 300. :)

So for the question. Does this sound reasonable? Moly rings...flat top pistons, screw in studs, double roller timing (steel, not nylon).. all the labor, etc?

$1500 is the going rate around here to rebiuld or buy a rebiult long block 302. I'd personally have it rebuilt, that way you can build it the way you want.

I would say that is a good price. Does that include all parts and gaskets? Should have a strong and streetable 302 when you are done. Do your cam research!

Yeah, I checked out the cam specs... 272 duration, 484 lift... (both advertised)... It's a Crane Entergizer cam... 272H10 I believe. Power band in the 2000-5000 range...

The engine guy thinks I should pull 325-350 with the whole setup... So I'm not too unhappy about that...

Just need to get some better gears for my 8.8" now. :)

.040" over JE pistons
9.8 - ish compression
270 Comp Magnum cam (224@.050", .501" max lift, 110 CL)
289 heads (1.94"/1.6" valves, gasket matched and polished)
Crane roller rockers
Shelby high rise intake (gasket matched/polished)
Holley dual inlet 600cfm
MSD ignition with 32deg. total advance@3200 rpm
Hedman long tube headers

This combination made 330 hp @ 6000rpm and 336 lb/tq @ 4500 rpm....on pump 93 octane. At 110 mph, this motor will sit you back in the seat with 3.00 gears. I've only run a 14.3@98.9 mph, though. I got wheelhop off the line and had to pedal to make it hook up, then got hop going into 2nd gear. I've installed Traction masters, a Detroit Locker, and I'm putting 235 or 245 tires on the rear.

That price appears to be fair. I would check with some other VMFers here, like CAMACHINIST, WHISPERER and others to get their opinions on cams, pistons, rings, lifters, etc.

Steve Leslie, 65 coupe, back on the road (watch it!) 302, toploader, A/C, disc brakes, bench seat, tri-bars, tri-Ys, now I need tri-power!

Yeah, I went to a place that had a crate motor for like $1395 or something like that. I dind't relaly check what kind of motor or anything like that. I figure that it would have been a push either way, but that it might have been cheaper in the long run to go this route, so...

Hmmm... I'm wondering then if I'm going to be lower than what you have there... Cause it looks like yours is a better setup than mine.

How did you know/figure out you needed premium gas?

The rebuild I just had done on my coupe's 289 was almost $1,800, but that included $100+ to have the dampener redone and another $75 to have the engine superheated (sorry, forget the technical term) to burn off all the dirt, rust, and grease. My 390 was about $1,600, but I provided the new intake manifold and camshaft kit.

So it's starting to sound as though I'm not that bad off. :)

Now if I could only find a good ratio for my rear end. :)
