Seeing as Boss 351 engines were in 4 speed cars, they didn't have automatics which use flexplates and not flywheels. Do you have an automatic behind your Boss engine and you want a flexplate? Or do you have a manual transmission and you need a flywheel? I don't believe the Boss flywheel was anything different than a regular 351 Cleveland flywheel. You should be able to get either a flexplate or flywheel from any of the Mustang shops.

you need a 164 tooth flywheel unless somebody changed it to the 157/160 tooth small flywheel and i would highly recomend the 164 tooth with an 11" clutch cause it will hold more power with less pedal effort then the 10.5" clutch. take a tape or ruler and measure the disc and if its 11" you need the 164 tooth , if its a 10" or 10.5" count the ring gear teeth to see if its the 157/160 tooth. and it must be a 28 ounce unless somebody rebuilt the engine and had it internally balanced. if you look on the back you will see the weight as part of the flywheel it will be like a small bulge.

thanks for the tip, but i can't measure the flywheel because there wasn't one on the engine. all i know is that i have an original boss engine with the correct crankshaft (4MA). i was told i need a 164 tooth flywheel with 11" and 28oz.

i seem to find more than one item that fits these specs at MU and don't really know which one to take.

thanks

Ford racing doesn't have a 164 tooth flywheel for a small block listed in their catalog. I would give Mustangs Unlimited a call tomorrow. I'm sure one of their sales reps can help you. The flywheel you are looking for is a steel flywheel with 164t, with 28oz. imbalance that can handle an 11" clutch. An aluminum version may be available, but if your main goal is restoration and street driving, the steel version is the one you want. Good luck, and enjoy that Boss!
