Would a blown head gasket cause you to fail emmisions?

My vote: no. Long story, but I have to get the Toyota pickup inspected or face a fine. Parked since July because of a head gasket. (not my primary ride). I'm thinking of limping it to a shop to get the sticker. Just don't want to waste my time. I have a new motor for it (@300K+, it's not worth doing the head gasket - again.) Thoughts?

Kind of depends on the general condition of the motor as well as where the gasken is blown. If the gasket is leaking between cylinders, there may be cross over between cylinders where partially unburned gases are being dumped into an adjoining cylinder, this could result in increased emissions at the tailpipe. Even without the head gasket issue, if the engine is otherwise worn out and has lots of blowby it may likewise have increased emissions at the tailpipe. Can you park it off the street and non-op it?

Hadn't thought of that. I was just considering that it passed with flying colors last year. The secret to Toyota emmissions is to keep the tubes clean. If they carbon up (and seal off, and they will), you are toast. Mine are clean because I had the head off about 20K ago. Did not consider any potential dousing from the coolant. Damn. Guess Rhino is going to be tagless until I do the motor swap.

Even if it does fail, I think you might get a "failed" sticker and, in NJ I think, allows you another 30 days to get it reinspected. I drove my mustang with just a red "failed" sticker for like 3 months with no problems, although I wasn't pulled over for anything else.

Yes. It'll get antifreeze on the O2 sensor and screw up the A/F mixture, etc. with the computer. In PA if you drove the car <5k miles in the last year you get the sticker but don't have to do the actual test (get there money somehow of course)...check with your inspection station.

Doesn't it say "rejected". I recall mentioning to the inspector I was looking forward to having the reject status removed from my car.

As far as the blown head gasket goes I'd say there's a fair chance it wouldn't even get by the visual test (if they do that where you are) and that's before they let the computer take a whiff.

Carbbed! We don't need no stinkin' O2 sensor! That's the 22RE. This thing has a cat only. As far as "visual" inspection, as long as the lights and horn work, and you have tread on your "tars" they could give less of a flip. But don't let even one of your three license plate lights be out (two on the accessory bumper, one under the bed *factory*) and you fail baby. Yeah, *that's* a safety issue.

A 300k mile engine with a blown head gasket? If it passes emissions, they might as well scrap the program *LOL*.

A car with a blown head gasket is not going to be running right, because it's going to have lack of compression. The lack of compression is going to make the fuel not burn as well, raising tail pipe emissions, and it will definately fail.

In California, if you fail too bad, the car is deemed a "gross polluter" and only a state referee can clear the car to be driven on public streets (or be legally registered) again. It usually takes several weeks to get an appointment with the referee, you have to go to the DMV and get a "moving permit" to get it there (or trailer it) and the closest referee to my house is about 45 miles away. Hope you don't have to do THAT nonsense in your state!

Ask me how I know this! :pissed:

yeah, its rejected, haha you'd think I remember that since I was staring at one for 3 months (the backside of it anyways)...
